Jess Aarons is an 11-year-old boy who’s an outsider at both his school and his home. After training all summer to be the fastest kid in school, that dream is thwarted by the new girl, Leslie Burke, who competes in the race and wins.
The two soon become friends and realize they compliment each other. Leslie’s knack for telling magical stories brings out Jess’ love of drawing. They create a magical kingdom called Terabithia — only the magic comes to life when they realize they can travel there by swinging on a rope over a stream near their homes!
Once there, they encounter a secret world full of trolls, giants, and flying creatures — not all of them friendly either. A stunning landscape of ancient forests, winding rivers, and rushing waterfalls provides the backdrop for a beautiful castle. Jess and Leslie are named King and Queen, and must fight the requisite dark forces of evil.
Think of this movie as the Narnia of 2007. Sure, we have an idea how it’s going to turn out, but the awesome special FX, gnarly creatures, vivid scenery, and sweet friendship between Jess and Leslie make this a winner. But don’t expect it to be all joyful.
Based on the Newbery Awarding-winning novel by Katherine Paterson (check out the book!), this movie is a fun fantasy adventure.
